Voice Sections and Classes

All performers in the Voice Division must select their performance pieces from one of these general repertoire categories:

  • Standard Repertoire (ST): Songs that are generally considered as Art Songs from baroque, classical, semi-classical, and romantic periods. Other than songs from early Baroque operas, operatic arias are not appropriate in this repertoire. Pieces can be sung either in the Solo or Ensembles sections.
  • Musical Theatre Repertoire (MT): Concert versions of songs from operettas and musical theatre, and can be sung in either the Solo or Ensemble sections.
  • Operatic Repertoire (OP): Solo arias from the world of opera, and only to be performed in the Opera Section.

All selections are to be performed from memory, and each performer must provide their own accompanist. For each class, notice the Repertoire column value ("Rep").

High School Solo Section

Each performer will perform two songs of contrasting styles and periods from the specified repertoire (Rep). For example, performers in classes V01 and V02 will perform from the Standard Repertoire (ST), and each performer in classes V03 and V04 will perform pieces from the Musical Theatre Repertoire (MT).

High School Ensemble Section

Each ensemble of two to four singers will perform two songs of contrasting styles and periods from the specified repertoire (Rep). For example, ensembles in classes V05 will perform from the Standard Repertoire (ST), and those in class V06 will from the Musical Theatre Repertoire (MT).

College/Adult Solo Section

All soloists in the College/Adult sections must be at least 18 years old and in a study or coached program; they must also be non-professional, meaning they cannot be regularly teaching or performing as professionals.

Each soloist in class V07 must prepare two songs from the Standard Repertoire (ST) with at least one piece in a language other than English. Soloists in class V08 will prepare three arias from the Operatic Repertoire (OP) with at least one of them not in English. The soloist will select the first piece, and the adjudicator will select the second piece from the remaining prepared arias. This audition process is common throughout the world of opera. The soloist will announce the aria, the opera, and the composer.

College/Adult Ensemble Section

Each duet or trio in class V09 will perform two songs from the Standard Repertoire (ST). For class V10, duets and trios will perform from the Opera and Operetta Repertoire (OP), and one or both pieces may be in English.
